I’m not sure what to think of Joe Esposito’s & Rick Anderson’s prognostications for libraries focusing on special collections.  I agree that the ITHAKA survey got me concerned – especially the part about viewing the library primarily as a buying agent.  But I am also uncomfortable with the idea of spending so much on human and financial resources on very narrow areas.

I’m a big believer in balance – not necessarily 50-50, but meeting the overall needs of our patrons.  IF we can provide our students access to the secondary resources needed for their undergraduate education without having to archive what everybody else has (e.g. Nature, Science, WSJ, etc.) AND spend more on making (currently)  collections of primary resources accessible, I’d be interested.

I don’t think this argument would work well for public libraries, though.  The general community is much more diverse and geographically dispersed than the academic community, with correspondingly diverse needs.

What are your thoughts?
