Internet search engines drove US librarians to redefine themselves

See on Scoop.itLibrary & Information Science Research

Although librarians adopted Internet technology quickly, they initially dismissed search engines, which duplicated tasks they considered integral to their field.

Karen R. Harker‘s insight:

Their research found that, when threatened by the rise of search engines, librarians (as a profession) went through 4 stages: dismissing (denial); differentiating ourselves (more denial); collaborating with search engines (bargaining); finally, redefining ourselves (acceptance & moving on).

Actually, this seems like good research into how professions evolve.  Which is good and right, because that is Ranganthan’s 5th Law: The Library (and librarianship, by extension) is a growing organism.  The article is “in-press” but available to subscribers:  http://amj.aom.org/content/early/2013/07/15/amj.2012.0201.abstract
