Now this is interesting – studying the borrowing habits of members of a subscription library – 200 years ago!  

"By creating a database of borrowing habits, researchers will be able to see which authors were most popular in a particular year or decade, and to graph authors’ popularity over time. Did readers prefer the works of Jane Austen now seen as high-quality literature, or the best-sellers of Amelia Opie"

 

Like copyright, privacy does (apparently) have its own statute of limitations.  It will be fascinating to see how such a library was used in the early 19th century.
