Libraries & agendas

Barbara Fister’s posting on “Admitting Our Agendas” became even more intriguing when I happened on this piece in The Nation on the NY Public Libraries’ Central Library Plan.  While the agendas that Barbara refers to are along the lines of organizing the world of knowledge or helping people find information to form their own opinions, Scott Sherman highlights the hidden agendas and largely opaque decision-making of the NYPL trustees.  Based largely on access to trustees minutes, Scott outlines how the trustees went about trying to solve some ongoing budgetary issues, notably related to the crumbling infrastructure essentially by getting rid of it.  He notes in his “Lessons Learned” section that the lack of transparency and community involvement led to poor public reaction.  But of interest were the heavy involvements of two trustees in the real estate transactions – one a real estate developer and the other from the financial sector.  One final note about the lessons learned – there was very little involvement in the CLP of the librarians.
