Another tribute to the catalog card of yore.  I think we librarians were/are so attracted to the catalog card is because it is an elegant solution to the very difficult problem of describing and organizing the metadata of the great variety of scholarly works.  Prior to the card, we used multiple lists in books, which of course was far too difficult to maintain for a growing collection.  But the card is elegant, in that it provides a place for every piece of information needed to identify a work in a concise space which can be ordered in a very flexible manner.  It is, indeed, a triumph of economics of space.
