Reinventing the Impact Factor for the 21st century | The Scholarly Kitchen.

Phil Davis reviews the well-known and common problems with the journal impact factor (JIF).  He then proposes a solution for Thomson Reuters (TR) to merge the products and simply calculate JIFs based on the Web of Science (WoS).

Reading this article made me realize how old fashioned WoS really is.  It is sooooo ’90’s.  The model itself, the very foundation is reminiscent of the first online library catalogs (remember 4-3-3-1?).

And when you think about it, so is the model of scholarly citation:

  • References are still manually typed in.
  • Those that are imported from an indexing database or even the publisher’s Web site vary in accuracy and format.
  • Few citations include DOI or standard identifiers of any kind.
  • There continue to be a vast array of citation formats.
  • There also continue to be inconsistent journal titles (ignoring formal title changes) and author names.

Surely this service is ripe for complete overhaul.
