The Mess of Ebooks | Peer to Peer Review

The Mess of Ebooks | Peer to Peer Review.

From Wayne Bivens-Tatum in LJ: He effectively sums up the issues, “the mess”, with library-provided ebooks.  What I wish he emphasized, though, was that the “mess” is solely the result of vendor requirements, and not, repeat, NOT, what libraries actively seek.

But, of course, we are the sum of the decisions we make and the actions we take.  Librarians have decided to pursue collecting ebooks for a small variety of reasons, notably increased accessibility of the content, decrease in available space to store physical materials, and inability to afford multiple copies/versions/formats.  We have decided to pursue these collections despite the publishers’ & providers’ sometimes draconian restrictions & requirements, and absurd platforms that require 18 steps to activate.  But we have made these decisions based on the balance of the benefits and the costs, both fiscal and utility.

But it would behoove us (behoove? really?) to be more selective in our decisions when it comes to paying money to publishers with uncompromising policies, and to work more closely with providers in making their platforms more useful and usable.
