In my review of the “Suggested Content” from ScoopIt, I noticed a number of items with titles like, “Beyond Bibliometrics”, or lamenting the lack of value to these measures.  I think that it is true that bibliometrics should not be treated as an ends in and of themselves.  I also agree with this posting that more research is needed to determine the strength of the association with innovation and contribution to knowledge.  I believe there is one and I believe it is strong…if the scholarly communication model were not tinkered with.  It would also be helpful to know how much this tinkering affects the validity of the measures.

As if to prove my point, here was the next item in my suggestions list: ‘Sleeping beauty’ papers slumber for decades – Nature.com.
