Actually, there has been quite a bit of research on the various purposes of citation, mostly, though, in scientific literature.  This posting discusses citation in the humanities.  The patterns of citation in these disciplines can be quite different, as this author notes.  The use of primary versus secondary resources and the multiple references to the same resource are just two such differences.  

 

In fact, there are researchers who have been trying to develop automated tools to distinguish these subtle differences within the text, taking into consideration numerous variables.  But none can replace the human brain.  The various citation metrics are blunt instruments of "impact" and were most valid before we became aware of them.
